Girl Scouts Gateway Council - Be Prepared Not Scared

Learning about the importance of disaster preparedness is key at every age!  Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies (BRACE) was proud to encourage the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council to learn the importance of disaster preparedness when we recently hosted the 2nd annual “Be Prepared, Not Scared” patch event.

Twenty local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members taught more than 50 girls and 30 adults, some of whom drove more than 160 miles to attend the event, skills such as emergency food preparation, caring for pets during natural disasters,  where to find heat and light when there is no electricity and the importance of water purification. Other topics included light first aid, creating a communications plan, working with service-providing non-profits, and how to safely shelter during a disaster.  One of the highlights was the opportunity for girls to practice ham radio skills as they communicated with off-site members of the Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) team.

The event centered on teaching girls of all ages resiliency skills that they can use in their families and neighborhoods. April Bartley, Girl Experience Manager for the Gateway Council, called it a “huge success that she hopes to duplicate across the region.” Call 850-739-3981 for more information about how BRACE can tailor a disaster preparedness event for your group's adults or youths.
